Puka Pukara is an Inca archaeological site near Cusco known as the “Red Fortress,” offering scenic views, historic ruins, and a peaceful stop on the archaeological circuit.

Just a little beyond Tambomachay, perched on a gentle hillside with sweeping views of the Cusco valley, stands Puka Pukara—the “Red Fortress” of the Incas. Its name comes from the warm reddish tones the stones take on at sunset, giving the site a magical glow that makes it one of the most photogenic stops on the archaeological circuit.
Unlike the finely carved ceremonial sites of the empire, Puka Pukara was more practical in nature. It served as a military outpost, checkpoint, and resting place for messengers, nobles, and travelers heading toward the Sacred Valley. With its lookout towers, storage areas, and defensive walls, it was perfectly positioned to keep watch over this important route.
