If you stayed in one of the Loki Hostels over the last year and a half
I am sure you have seen one of the little Loki Guides. We are now
working on a new version of the guide.

So we uploaded the current version on to the Loki website here - http://www.lokihostel.com/loki_guide

We would like your ideas on what places to add to the guide? which cities?
what attractions, restaurants, bars, etc. to add, change or remove?
What was not needed and what information you found missing?

Add your information to the discussion here, or comment on the relevant page of the guide on the website.

Thanks
The Loki Team

New Travel Guide with mancora

The new version of the travel guide with mancora included will be more than likely ready in about 6 weeks time after we gather peoples opinions on it and change some of the stuff in the old one to be more updated.

Feel free to give us any tips or suggestions you may have.

Thanks

Dave

This is great info on

This is great info on Mancora. When is the new travel guide coming out.

Dror and Jakes version of Mancora Guide

Draft text for the Mancora section -

Mancora

Mancora is
the most famous beach town in Peru with year round summer days, left
hand surf break, and the best ceviche mancora is the place to leave
those alpaca sweaters in the bag and step into the sun.

Map of Mancora showing the hostel, few restaurants, bank and bus terminals etc

Loki Picks of Mancora

* The most obvious of them all is the Beach itself where you can laze
around, sun bathe, swim, surf at your own leisure - very relaxing.
* El Tuno restaurant on the main drag for the best food at a reasonable
price - great tuna steak, lasagnes and pizza all in the region of 15-25
soles for mains.
* Take a surf or a kitesurfing lesson and get to ride those waves and feel the adrenalin or rent a body board.
* Good for breakfast is Baracuda cafe on the main drag with good
sandwiches and juices - however dont expect many places to have
breakfast before 10-11am most days at earliest.

Things to do in Mancora

* Relax by the hostel pool or on the beach
* Water sports -surfing, kitesurfing, fishing, snorkeling, diving, etc.
* A day trip to the wild life around Mancora
* Fuck all

Accomodation

Loki del Mar, Mancora
Looking
for a new challenge we decided on setting up a high quality beach
resort at backpackers prices, Loki del Mar, Mancora. With two of our
bar managers Jake(Cusco) and Dre(La Paz) joining us for the project we
headed to the north beaches of Peru. With a all new construction we are
creating the perfect place to take a break of your travels, no early
treks, no cathedrals, no ruins, just enjoy the sun in the day and party
at night. Comfy rooms of no more than 6 beds, biggest pool in Mancora
with its own bar, sea front with the well known left hand surf break.
Official opening 31st of October 2008, if coming through Mancora before
come and see the progress we might even have some beds.

address - Avenida Piura 262
right in the centre on the main street

Bars

The
Loki Bar is the place to be but if you feel like getting out of the
hostel for a while there is numerous bars on the main drag for you to
attend. Once the Loki bar closes the bars on the main street all act as
clubs.

Restaurants

* The Beef House for a good steak or burger,
* El Tuno for a good mix of local and international dishes,
* the Sushi house (we will check for the name) for sushi
* mama.... for good pizzas.

Travel

From
Lima - Take a direct bus with Cruz del Sur or Flores which takes about
18 hours - leaves mid afternoon and arrives in mancora early morning
just in time to check into your hostel and head to the beach for a well
deserved swim and bus departs mancora similarly mid afternoon and
arrives in Lima late morning. You can also take a flight to Tumbes with
aerocondor or Piura with once or twice a day is departures - generally
very early or late evenings. You can then either get the local Eppo bus
to Mancora or get a small van for prices 15-30 soles.

From
Trujillo or Huaraz - There will be many buses heading on further north
to Mancora from trujillo and huaraz with recommended companies such as
Cruz del Sur and ormeno and Movil tours (do they actually go to
mancora?).

Other Useful Tips

* There is only one bank in
town "Banco de la Nacion" but there are a few cash machines. Best to
have as much local currency as possible and change your dollars in
advance. Not many hostels, hotels, bars or restaurants will accept
payment in USD.

Introduction from the Hostel Managers to the new Loki Guide

We're thinking of adding a new Seciton at the front of the Guide with a short introduction from each of the Hostel managers.

Just something short with a short history of each hostel.

Here's an example of Osgur's one:

Loki La Paz opened it´s doors to the backpacking public a good few
weeks before the official opening of Saint Patrick´s March 17th 2007. A
rag-taggle collection of old and newfound friends shared the dusty
building site and helped out with painting and other bits and bobs.

Dror,
Dave and Osgur had found the building on the first sweep of La Paz but
had disregarded it initially due to the amount of work required. The
old ballroom, now the bar, kept on luring them back and soon enough
Dror and Osgur settled in to the abandoned old Hotel Viena.
Effectively abandoned as a hotel for some 20 years, it was a mammoth
task to open up it up again in 10 weeks. Plumbing, electrics,
everything in fact had to be redone.

Dror
and Dave have gone on to open Loki Del Mar, but you will still find
Osgur usually sporting a Dublin Football jersey and an unkempt Mohawk
either in his office or the bar downing the last of the Guinness. He
will be delighted to have a chat!

Sugguested New Section

One other section that might not be to bad to put in under Mancora
might be Weather/Climate - Tropical type climate that has sunshine all
year round with small chance of rain in february and water temperatures
often over 20 degrees.

Travel section to and from Mancora

As far as i know movil tours dont go further north than Trujillo. Also
LAN flys to Piura as well as Aerocondor and far more comfortable. I
also think there are flights with TANs up north maybe once a day. Also
worth mentioned easy to get taxis from Piura for about $40-50 private
or shared a lot less and from Tumbes $30-40
