This is not only an alternative Inca Trail, it is the most original and exclusive, following paths only recently discovered. The Inca Jungle trail can be done in either four or three days and is a mixture of both biking and hiking to Machu Picchu. It is suitable for anyone with a sense of adventure and curiousity.

Full Itinerary

Day 1 – Cusco to Santa Teresa:
You will be picked up between 8-8.15am outside the hostel. Then you will be driven through the stunning Sacred Valley and dropped off at the 3200m high San Luis. Here you will change into the bike kit provided (gloves and helmets) and will receive a 20 minute briefing by your tour guide. Then the fun commences. freewheeling down quiet but challenging roads, past changing landscapes; you will not want to catch your breath until the first picnic stop in Alfamayo three hours from your starting point. Here you can enjoy your provided lunch, while taking in the panoramic views After a quick change and a dab of insect repellant it is onwards and downwards towards Huamanmarca, site of a recently discovered archaeological Inca finding where your tour guide will provide you with the historical background. You will then carry on descending to 1500 meters, while the jungle’s edge rears up to the small but charming town of Santa Maria.  You will then take a bus to Santa  Teresa  You will then carry on to Santa Teresa where you will spend the night (hostel accommodation).

 

Optional activity: Rafting 2 hours from Santa Maria (cost $40)

Day 2 – Santa Teresa to Aguas Calientes:

You will wake up and have breakfast at around 7am. After breakfast you will walk to Colpani taking in the views until you reach the restaurant where you will have lunch at the Hidroelectrica. From here it is only about a two and a half hour flat walk to Aguas Calientes, the base town for Machu Picchu.

Included is dinner at a local restaurant before retiring to your hostel with hot water and private bathrooms.

Optional activity: Canopy - South America`s highest Zip Lines.  approximately 15 minutes from Santa Teresa. Duration roughly 2 hours. Price s/150 pp. If you wish to do this please reserve when buying tour.


Day 3 Machu Picchu:

An early start today as you will walk to Machu Picchu to arrive for 6 a.m. which with a bit of luck will coincide with a beautiful sunrise! Your guide will leave no stones unturned but feel free to challenge their knowledge of Inca history. Afterwards you have free time to dally with the llamas and show off your photographic skills. Those who still have the will can tackle Huaynapicchu which actually looks down on Machu Picchu.  A frequent bus service takes visitors back to Aguas Calientes where you will catch the train to Ollantaytambo and then the tourist bus back to Cusco.
