3 DAY RAFTING TRIP

Description

This 3 day rafting expedition is an amazing adventure with rapids from class 3 to 5, including camping under the stars along the way.

Day 1

Pickup is at 7:00am sharp from Loki Hostel (if you are late the tour will leave without you with no refund). From Cusco we will head out of the city and stop in the town of Izcuchaca where you will have the opportunity to purchase any last minute snacks and also use the last real toilet until the end of the trip. The trip in total is about 4 hours; first climbing up to 4,100m.a.s.l. then descending to the put-in place near the Huallpachaca Bridge at 2,107m.a.s.l. Upon arrival to the river you will be given Dry Bags (1 bag for every 3 passengers) to pack your things and the guides will serve lunch beside the river at about 1:00pm (home cooked buffet meal: main course, salads and cold drinks). Before beginning the rafting the guides will give a detailed safety briefing and then we will have time in the water to practice following commands, flipping the boat, practice with the safety kayaks and other emergency procedures. The first day we will run rapids of class II and III before reaching the first campsite “Las Paltas” (The Avocados). At the campsite everyone will help set up tents and then there will be time to relax before dinner which will be served at approximately 7:30pm (dinner: soup, main course, hot drinks). We will have a campfire on the beach which will give heat and light and a special atmosphere for the first night on the banks of the Apurimac River. After dinner the guides will explain about the second day and it is recommended to get a good night sleep before the most intense day of the tour.

Day 2

Wake up call will be at 6:30am when you will be served a hearty breakfast and pack up your tent and personal items into the Dry Bags. After breakfast and breaking down camp we will start rafting. The first class IV rapid we will reach is the Chute where we will spend some extra time organizing for safety. After another hour of rafting we will reach the first portage where all passengers must walk as this is a very dangerous class V+ rapid, only guides run the portages. Continuing together in the rafts we will navigate more class IV rapids like the Mine Camp (Campo Minado) before reaching the Purgatory (El Purgatorio) which we will run until half way where there will be a short portage which we will walk. At mid-day we will stop on a beach to enjoy a re-energizing lunch and have a break to regain strength before continuing navigation on class IV and V rapids such as the Three Marias (Tres Marias). In total there will be about 6 hours of rafting on day 2. We will reach the second campsite at approximately 4:30pm at “La Mesa” (The Table). After organizing the campsite tea will be served (popcorn, hot and cold drinks and other snacks). Dinner will be served at about 7:30pm (barbeque; beef, chicken, vegetables, etc.) and there will be a sauna set up to help relax your tired muscles.

Day 3

After a delicious breakfast we will break-down camp and prepare for the most intense section of rafting as we will run rapids class III, IV and V like: the Trench (El Trinche) and No Name (Sin Nombre). We continue paddling until reaching the end of the tour, stopping in a few more places where we will portage such as The Toothache (La Muela) and You First. The third day we will also run all together some of the strongest rapids of the tour including Babaluah and the Last Laugh (class V). Ending the rafting on the third day the transport will be waiting for the group with lunch prepared. After unpacking the Dry Bags and organizing all the equipment on the transports we will return to Cusco, an approximate 2 ½ hour drive, arriving at approximately 3:00pm.
