Things to do

 

With Lima being a huge city, there is as you would expect an enormous amount of stuff to see and do.  This page is the gate way to all there is to see and do in this highly underrated city.

 

 

Around the hostel (Miraflores District)

 

Known for its shopping areas, gardens, flower-filled parks and beaches, it is one of the upscale districts that make up the city of Lima.

 

Kennedy Park - Go for a walk to Kennedys park and enjoy the view, restaurant, stalls with Peruvian souvenirs and more!


Surquillo Market - Love food? Go to Surquillo Market to learn a little bit more about Peruvian fresh food and species.


Beach Cliff - Go for a walk or a run on the sidewalk along the beach cliff and enjoy the beautiful views of the Peruvian sea.


LarcoMar Mall – Here you´ll find the best shops, restaurants, clubs, cinema and more.


Eating - Plenty of great restaurants including of Peruvian food, homemade food, international food and fast food chains.

 


The Bohemian district – Barranco


If you like bar hopping, this is the best district to do it. Ask a taxi to take you to Puente de los Suspiros and have a blast!

 

 

Visit Central Lima


The historical center of Lima is a UNESCO World Heritage site.  Places we recommend:


Plaza de Armas - Amazing architecture.  Change of the guard at 12pm on the dot every day.


San Francisco Convent – Take a guided tour of one of the oldest cathedrals in South America with underground catacombs.


China Town - Go and try the Peruvian-Chinese mixture of food in any restaurant called Chifa. You can find interesting shops with fun souvenirs.


Magical Water Circuit – A beautiful fountain park hosting a dozen different water fountains with music and light shows from Wednesdays till Sundays.

 

 

Museums


National Museum – One of the biggest and best museums in South America, hosting an excellent overview of the many Peruvian cultures.


Gold Museum – Houses a large collection of various jewels including gold, silver and precious stones.


Art Museum (MALI) – Exhibits a collection of art from Peru throughout many different periods and cultures.


Museum of Peruvian Culture – Showcasing musical instruments of Peru, arts, fabrics, ceramics and much more about Peru´s culture.

 

 

Shopping


Gamarra – a huge market of Lima where you can find anything at rock bottom prices.


Polvos Azules – another large interesting market, a good place to pick up cheap clothes and DVDs.


LarcoMar – a seaside entertainment centre offering quality shopping, cinema and class restaurants looking out over the cliff.

 

Jockey Plaza - 30 minutes by taxi is one of the biggest Malls in Lima with all kind of designers and Peruvian brands.

 

 

Sport & Adventure


Paragliding – One of the best and cheapest places in the world to gain a solo license, or just soar over the cliffs admiring the view.


Bungee Jumping- In sunny Santa Eulalia Valley, only 2 hours from Lima, with Puenting Peru.


Surfing – Venture down to the beach to pick up a quick surfing lesson, or if you already know what you´re doing, check out Punta Hermosa or La Herradura.


Palermino Islands – Swim with sea lions.


Beaches – there are some beautiful beaches just south of Lima, with white sand n all.

 

 

Entertainment


Movies – visit one of Lima´s cinema complexes to check out the latest blockbusters. Tuesdays is half price ticket and almost all pictures are in their native language.


Casinos – abound in Miraflores, check out one of the flash casinos such as Atlantic City.


Ruins – Check out the pre Inca ruins just half an hour south of Miraflores.

 


Gastronomic Feast – Restaurants


You should not leave Peru without tasting what Lima has to offer. From ceviches, criollos, Peruvian hamburgers, gourmet food you will be blown away. Here are some of our recommendations but be sure to explore the ones you think are interesting.


El Bigote - Just in front of Loki, one of the best places in Lima to eat clams and sea food for a bargain.

 

La Gran Fruta - If you want to eat healthy, there’s nothing better that having a fresh sandwich with a huge natural fresh juice.


San Antonio - a lovely place to enjoy those gourmet sandwiches that you crave for every now and again. Topped off with the most delicious deserts, this is a real bargain.


Mangos - Located in the modern shopping complex of Larcomar, this restaurant boasts a fine selection of local and international cuisine along with the best cocktails this side of cocktail heaven. Try the afternoon buffet, an excellent way to sample all the different types of dishes from Peru. 


Fu man chu - A tasty and filling feed is what you get in this airy restaurant. Only a short walk from the hostel with an extensive menu, just remember to do as the locals do and wash it all down with some Inca Kola.


La 73 – Trendy corner bistro of Barranco serving great salmon and tuna.


T´anta – serves high quality food with a casual and modern atmosphere.


Local menus - For a nice, filling lunch with a local crowd just pop around the corner of the hostel where you will find an array of eateries at your disposal, from fresh fish to meat dishes and all for an excellent price.


Punto Azul - Really excellent local restaurant which is always teeming with people enjoying the many dishes of freshly caught seafood. If you haven’t tasted the famous cebiche yet, then this is the place to do it. Take cash with you cause they don’t accept credit cards.


Canta Rana – well known cevicheria with a simple and familiar atmosphere.


Antica - Very popular restaurant chain which serves top quality Italian food. The restaurant in San Isidro is made from beautiful old wooden oak beams. 


Edo - Just around the corner from the hostel, this a great place where you can eat the greatest sushi in your life.

 

Nightlife

 


Loki hostel bar - The best place to party and get you in the mood for the pulsating night life that is Lima. Just ask the staff for the day’s specials.

 

El Dragon - One of our favorite’s, located a short taxi ride way from the hostel. Enjoy a range of music from house to that inevitable 80’s sound.


Aura – Large, popular nightclub and one of the trendiest places to be seen.


Gotica – Next to Aura, possibly Lima´s most popular nightclub.

 

Bartini - After a few cocktails in the Loki bar, cruise down to this trendy, funky house bar. Every Tuesday, free entry.


Bizarro - Great bar where you can dance to the rhythm of classic 70´s, 80s and 90´s music.

 

Tayta – just on the Miraflores park, Tayta is a popular local bar with live music during the week and a DJ on weekends.

 

Huaringas – Only 3 blocks away from Loki, known as a very popular and visited bar, with a wide selection of Pisco Sours.


Ayahuasca - A beautiful, modern Peruvian styled bar where you can taste great pisco sours and piqueos.


La Posada de Angel – A bohemian bar with a relaxed and unique atmosphere with live music every night.


Sargento Pimienta – A mix of international retro from the 70s to the 90s plus occasional live rock.


Puente de los Suspiros - Great place in Barranco district where you can find lots of bars like Picas, Santos where you’ll definitely have a great time.
