Yesterday the some of the Loki Cusco Hostel team visted some of the surrounding areas around Cusco to see first hand the damage done by the floods. Cusco update, available tourist options and volunteering

Last night at roughly 10pm local time, the Peruvian Police reported that they had airlifted all of the tourists from Aguas Calientes. There are reports saying that the rail link to Machu Picchu could be closed for the next 3 months, but alternative routes should be opening over next few weeks as repairs progress.

Loki Hostel will remain in contact with local tour agencies to see when Machu Picchu will be open again. Currently there are still biking, rafting and quad bike tours available and within the next few days the Inka Jungle trek will restart.

State of Emergency in Cusco

Due to the heavy rains that have been falling in recent days, there are significant problems in the Cusco region and routes to Machu Picchu are currently blocked. There will be no tours or treks leaving for the Sacred Valley or Machu Picchu for what looks like at least 3 days.

The Peru rail lines are currently blocked but repairs are being conducted, with a view that if the rain stops and the lines are cleared train services can resume.
