First of all, we would like to thank all our guests that have volunteered their time, or donated towards the projects we are supporting in Cusco. The response has been overwhelming so far, and our partner charities have offered their sincere gratitude for all the support. We still need people, so please come to Cusco and help- we can assure you, you wont regret it
Here is an update on progress following the last 3 weeks of volunteer work:
Azul Wasi - a home for street kids
The Azul Wasi home is located just outside Cusco, in Oropesa. The kids of the home were evacuated and are cureently safe in Cusco. We needed people to save the home, and the animals that the home rely on to be self-sustaining. Over the course of the last 3 weeks, we have had almost 100 guests from Loki helping hands on to build a flood defense wall to protect the kids home. The wall is almost finished and just in time as rains have started again in the area. We will continue supporting this project until the work is complete, and monitor their situation
Paca Vilcanota- Urubamba Residents Association
Since we first found the Paca Vilcanota community 3 weeks ago, we have been taking Loki guests out to the community 3-4 times per week, to help mainly at this stage with the clear operation following the destruction of 84 houses within this small area. Loki Guests and land owners are working hand in hand to salvage any reuseable materials, and just this week the local government have finally visited to co-ordinate how more effort can be channelled into the area.
There is still a long way to go, before the area is cleared and ready to be considered for re-construction but every pair of hands we have helps move this on. We are also working hard to raise more funds for the community. It is essential that houses like these, so close to the river, are built with concrete and cement foundations to avoid a repeat problem of destruction. Materials like this are difficult to attain financially for communities like this however, and the cost of building a fortified house like this would be in the region of $5000.
We will put our best efforts into raising money and offering man power on this project, but we need your help
